JASAL 2023 National Conference

JASAL 2023 will take place at Gifu Shotoku Gakuen University, Hashima Campus on Saturday, 21st October, 2023.

Format: Hybrid (on-site conference with online participation possible)

Schedule

Friday, 20th October, 2023 afternoon (3:45 pm~approximately 4:45 pm, followed by tea and biscuits in MELT at the university until 5.15pm)

Pre-conference event: SAC Tour of English World (elementary school SAC run by Gifu Shotoku Gakuen University MELT team)

University students who volunteer as staff at the English World will show you the site and talk about what they do in the space. Participants will also be able to tour the school and see the classrooms and find out a little about the elementary school English program.

We will meet at MELT, the Social Language Learning Space at Gifu Shotoku Gakuen University (Hashima Campus, the same place as the conference). Participants can leave baggage in the room next to MELT and then we will walk together to the university-affiliated elementary school for the tour of the SAC. The walk takes about 3 minutes.

To reach the campus, you can get a public bus from outside JR Gifu Station. The bus costs 450 yen each way. The bus leaves at 3:13 PM from Gifu Station stop 6, W67. It takes 27 minutes, and arrives right at the university. Please be careful not to get off at Gifu Campus. You need to stay on the bus until you reach Hashima Campus.

Note that at the elementary school, participants will need to remove their shoes and wear slippers.

Saturday 21st October, 2023

09:00-18:00: JASAL2023 Conference at Gifu Shotoku Gakuen University, Hashima Campus (1-1 Yanaizucho, Takakuwanishi, Gifu, 501-6122).

20:00-22:00: Conference Networking Dinner at 壁の壁 岐阜店 (Kabe no Kabe), very close to JR Gifu station. ¥4500 per person (Reservations for the dinner will be opened closer to the conference date.)

For on-site participants, please use this form to reserve your spot at the Friday SALC tour, Saturday reception, or Sunday’s post-conference hike, and to book a lunch bento and a seat on the chartered morning bus. Please note that bento orders must be made by 30th September.

Bank transfers (details in the registration form) can be made up until Wed., 18th October (Presenters, please complete payment by 30th September 2023). Onsite payment is possible in CASH only.

If you’ll be making your own way there, please refer to the schedule below for public buses. Please be careful not to get off at Gifu Campus. You need to stay on the bus until you reach Hashima Campus (if taking the direct bus). Please note that there is no chartered bus heading back to Gifu station after the conference. Please use the public transport options posted below.

Title: Fixing Issues under the Radar: Student Agency and Leadership in Self-Access Learning Communities

Daniel Hooper, PhD

Daniel Hooper (PhD, Nagoya University of Foreign Studies) is an associate professor in the Department of English Communication at Tokyo Kasei University. He has taught in Japan for 17 years, predominantly in higher education and English conversation schools. His doctoral thesis was an ethnographic case study of a student-led learning community in a Japanese university self-access center. His research interests include learner and teacher identity, communities of practice, and the English conversation school industry. His most recent project is “From Student to Community Leader: A Guide for Autonomy-Supportive Leadership Development” a practice-oriented book co-authored with Satoko Watkins and published by Candlin and Mynard.
